Endre Röder

Endre Roder was born in Budapest in 1933, his family moved to Malta shortly after and here he spent most of his childhood. In 1949 he moved to the UK where he remained; currently living in Swanage. He studied architecture and fine art going on to become a museum and art gallery curator. He also taught art and art history in secondary schools, colleges and universities before becoming a full time artist in 1988. He draws much inspiration from Balthus and Kirchner, as well as from Victorian portrait photography.

His work is distinctive and easily recognisable with his Hungarian origins and early life in Malta having a visible influence on his work. His work is figurative and captures the vulnerability, innocence and grace of women; they appear to never quite meet the eye of the viewer embodying them with sensuality. He draws upon his knowledge and understanding of art, the use of colour and careful compositions. Detailed signatures throughout much of Endre's work such as a white horse or white doves make his work a collector’s delight. His work can be found in public and private art collections all over the world.

His magic is in his ability to capture the vulnerability, innocence and grace of women, whilst enlivening their characters with an intriguing deep sensuality. His woman fascinate, as it appears that they cannot quite be grasped. They sit a gentle distance from the onlooker, never quite meeting the eye.
