John S Haggan (1946 – 2021)

John S Haggan painted professionally from 1979 – 2021. He has exhibited all over Ireland and has had paintings commissioned from across the world including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, America and Canada. With commissioned pieces being held within the House of Lords collection in Westminster and many other corporate and private collections he has truly captured the attention of many with his cloudy summer skies, peaceful snow scenes and warm autumn landscapes.

His work is reminiscent of many 18th and 19th century artists and he has often been compared to Constable; having portrayed the Irish landscape on a par with Constable’s portrayal of the English landscape. Specialising in capturing the beauty, peace and tranquillity of the Irish landscape, the art works he created were always full of life (like the artist himself). Birds flocking in a stormy sky, fields filled with gently grazing sheep, Ivy clad trees and a patchwork of meadows, hedgerows, gently flowing rivers and streams. He has been the subject of several Television programmes documenting his work. His mastery of winter landscapes is world famous. His work has been used by one of the largest fine art publishers in the world, Felix Rosenstiels.

He has inspired and taught many others to paint over the years in both private, group and charity classes. In recent times when the world was in disarray and face to face classes were no longer an option he continued to tutor free classes on social media to help alleviate the stress faced by many during the Lockdown. His mastery of his favourite medium, Oils, left many in awe of his ability to transfer a scene to canvas. Whilst many of his paintings were local scenes, many more were scenes created from a mind filled with inspiration of the landscapes that surrounded him and memories of childhood along the coastal towns of Bangor and Donaghadee.

John Passed away earlier in 2021, a dedicated family man and undoubted Artistic Genius he will be sorely missed by his loving family, the landscapes of Ireland and all those who knew him.
