Denis Ferguson

Denis Ferguson works in a diverse range of themes including music, opera, sport, landscapes and the work of Old Masters. These themes often overlap and are combined alongside the use of a range of mediums. Some may be fairly literal or more abstracted, loose and expressive or carefully controlled as the subject demands. 

Ferguson mainly works in oil on canvas, watercolour and pastel but these mediums are often uses some or all of these when developing a theme

‘Music & Musicians’, and work influenced by visits to Italy, for example, are each treated in a variety of styles. The former is mostly to do with the playing of music – the playing parts, i.e., head, hands and instrument. It’s also the relationship between person, instrument and the tune being played (- titles are usually appropriate names of tunes, or musical terms). 

The Italian theme may use sculptural and architectural forms, but which provide food for the imagination, but it’s the colours that appeal most; some paintings contain only glimpses of things seen or remembered and try to create a sense of place.

Living in a rural area, the seasons have more significance, again the changing colours dominate, and being a keen fisherman, rivers and lakes feature often as subject matter. All of these natural elements are constant sources of inspiration.

Denis has exhibited throughout Ireland and abroad, including a solo exhibition in France, and also works on commission pieces.
